Can’t say too much about it just yet, but Mummo is an exciting new social enterprise aimed at … you’ve guessed it … mums! It focuses on mums as individuals in their own right, whilst recognising that being a parent is an integral and incredibly important part of who they are. It’s designed to help mums with dependent children (including step mums, foster mums, adoptive mums and so on) to:
- find a balance between their own needs and the needs of their families
- make the most of themselves and their lives
Essentially, it’s all about making mums happier! Why? Because postnatal illness is more than three times as common now as it was in the 1950s, with over 50% of mums in a 2004 Netmums survey saying that they either have or may have suffered from it. That means a significant proportion of mothers feeling fairly miserable for a while at least. And evidence shows that a mother’s state of mind has a very real impact on her children’s cognitive, emotional and behavioural development. It’s true – happy really do mums make for happy families!
If you’d like to find out more about Mummo, visit the holding page at www.mummo.co.uk and register your interest. That way, I can keep you posted as things progress. In the meantime, you can also carry on reading my blog right here!
Thanks.

‘Mummo’ means ‘grandmother’ in Finnish.

Hi Marianne, thanks for the comment. I do know, but I didn’t when I chose ‘Mummo’ as the name for the business! Never crossed my mind to do a search on the meaning of the word, although I checked other companies, trademarks, etc. Hey ho. At least there’s some kind of logical link – I could have ended up with a business called ‘donkey’ or something unfortunate like that in Finnish!
